The old winners will probably not win, but that's because the contest and the music changed. A good artist is not a guarantee you'll win, it's more about the song and act.

Ireland may have won Eurovision 7 times but it has never won since televoting started in 1998.

The only points it got this year were from Albania - which used a jury. The Irish performance wasn't great but there were far worse entries that got loads more points.

I can't see Ireland winning Eurovision again in my lifetime under the current system (even if they sent Brian Kennedy singing You Raise Me Up - one of the best songs ever!). One thing I can guarantee is that Ireland will give Latvia and/or Lithuania (assuming they make the final) its 10 and 12 points for the next 5 years because of all the Latvians and Lithuanians living there!

We willl see an eastern country winning next year, but in 2009 there will probably be some changes and the West will be on the throne

Yes Dervish wasn't thw worst. As i said i think France was absolutely the worst song in my opinion and Ireland should have done better.

BTW,i didn't knew that there are a lot of Latvians and Lithuanians in Ireland

Are you crazy? Of course we shouldn't leave. The western countries started the contest, if anyone should leave it should be the eastern countries. I'm not saying anyone should leave but if someone was gonna leave, it should be the eastern countries.

I think the West countries should never leave! We were the first ones to start this, it it would be pretty bad and unfair if we got out...

The problem here is the west doesn't take ESC as seriously as the east. You don't send good songs, you don't vote for your choices and whine about bloc voting and diaspora. I'm sorry but if you don't take it seriously, you shouldn't expect success naturally.

As a side note, bulgarian entry in 2007 was awesome, but her performance was not top. She missed the high pitched shrieks a few times, but being the first one to take stage is always the most difficult, so I really respect her.

Well considering Sweden and most of the Western countries have sent decent songs in the last yearand it is bloc voting that skews results. Let me just give an example. Here is an example of the voting of Croatia

In 2007 they gave

12 to Serbia
10 to Bosnia
8 to Macedonia

In 2006

12 to Bosnia
8 to Macedonia

in 2005

12 to Serbia
10 to Bosnia
8 to Macedonia

Is that bloc voting?I will leave you to make up your own minds

eh..I disagree! they got what they deserve

In 2006 they indeed have good songs and they got what they deserved again: Finland won, Sweden 5th. And in your stats you accidentally skipped the 10 points from Croatia to Finland.

Ehh, it seems here's where the core problem lies... "West" and "East" * seem to fundamentally disagree about what is a "good song" or "decent song"... :?

(* both are of course very simplified concepts, a rough division which leaves many countries "out", like many Nothern and Southern countries that don't immediately seem to belong in either)

You are right Melina, what constitutes a good song to France may be thought of as dire in Macedonia. I suppose it shows the current trends in music and how it varies from country to country. I was grateful to Albania last year for the five points last year, they were the only ones who liked Folk style music !

i dont think that the west should leave. it would be also very boring if only the east sent entries. but i believe that the west should improve its songs and be able to compete the east, the latter showing to be more interesting in the recent years. The west should convince us that it stll exists!
Anyways, there is also a planetary reorienting towards the east, with the balance weighing more in favour of oriental countries. Not only in music, but in all fields :D

I really hope we'll end this "west vs. east" discussion after this year. Why the hell can't we just call it europe instead of west and east? Europe are one big family, but the countries in east have just been better the last 8 years in my opinion.

West has been one big joke, especially the big 4. And by the way a lot of western europeans have voted for east countries. Iceland gave Ukraine 12 points in 2004, Netherlands and Malta gave 12 points to Estonia in 2001, Spain and Germany gave Latvia 12 points in 2002. :scratch

My favourites the former years:

2008: Turkey

2007: Serbia

2006: Romania

2005: Serbia-Montenegro

2004: Ukraine

2003: Romania

2002: Croatia

As you see all my favourites are from east.

But this year I actually really think that west have made a comeback. Norway, San Marino, Sweden, Switzerland, Portugal, Iceland, and France, are all great entries.
