Yes, think about it...much of Ex-USSR, and Eastern-European in the second semi.

yeah Russia got 3th place because of there weren't all of its little brothers in this semi.
and yes greece deserved to win 1st semi. she deserved to win esc 53 too. But ....

So it's obvious by facts as well now that Russia won undeservedly. 3rd in the semi , that's the equivalent of Denmark winning and the second semi was way more competitive. Also , it's sad how Portugal fell from 2nd to 13th.

Surprising results!? :o

I had never in my wildest dreams thought that we came 3rd in the semifinal, and Sweden was the juries choice.

OMG, this has been the most surprising ESC ever.

More sadly is that Croatia ended 4th in semi and 21st in final. That is SAD!

I posted this in the statistics thread, but actually I guess here's where it rather belongs...
There was a very interesting comparison scoreboard at a Swedish Eurovision site (link below), where someone had calculated the result based on semifinal results only. Quite remarkable differences..! E.g. Portugal would have been 5th instead 13th, Finland 15th instead of 22nd, and Russia only 4th...

First mentioned is the score and points based on semifinals, in brackets the actual final score and points.

To me it seems the semifinals were in many respects much fairer than the final, as here you can, in a way, see what their positions would have been without most of neighbouring votes (as the blocs were mostly split in semis)...

1. (3) Greece 156 (218)
2. (2) Ukraine 152 (230)
3. (4) Armenia 139 (199)
4. (1) Russia 135 (272)
5. (13) Portugal 120 (69)
6. (15) Denmark 112 (60)
7. (21) Croatia 112 (44)
8. (9) Israel 104 (124)
9. (5) Norway 106 (182)
10. (11) Georgia 107 (83)
11. (8) Azerbaijan 96 (132)
12. (20) Romania 94 (45)
13. (12) Latvia 86 (83)
14. (7) Turkey 85 (138)
15. (22) Finland 79 (35)
16. (10) Bosnia & Hertzegovina 72 (110)
17. (14) Iceland 68 (64)
18. (17) Albania 67 (55)
19. (–) Macedonia 64 (–)
20. (–) Bulgaria 56 (–)
21. (18) Sweden 54 (47)
22. (–) Switzerland 47 (–)
23. (24) Poland 42 (14)
24. (–) Malta 38 (–)
25. (–) Cyprus 36 (–)
26. (–) Slovenia 36 (–)
27. (–) Moldavia 36 (–)
28. (–) Lithuania 30 (–)
29. (–) Belarus 27 (–)
30. (–) Netherlands 27 (–)
31. (–) Montenegro 23 (–)
32. (–) Ireland 22 (–)
33. (–) Andorra 22 (–)
34. (–) Belgium 16 (–)
35. (–) Czech Republic 9 (–)
36. (–) Estonia 8 (–)
37. (–) Hungary 6 (–)
38. (–) San Marino 5 (–)

(Big4 and Serbia are obviously not in the list, as they didn't take part in semifinals.)

Dima is the Justin Timberlake of Ex-USSR. Of course the Ex-USSR countrie voted for him a lot. It's not just because he's Russian, it's because they like him, for better or for worse. Did a lot of people vote for him blindly? Sure. But it wasn't just geography.

Russia has finished quite low several times in the past 8 years when sending bad artists with bad entries, so don't blame it on the Ex-USSR's. Blame it on his already established fame.

This kind of statistics do not say anything at all, the problem is so-called voting paradoxes.
Let's take a fictious example: the Netherlands can choose out of 18 songs in semi 1. Dustin of Ireland gets 12 points of the Netherlands, and Russia 10 points. But in the final also Latvia is competing: two party songs. Thus, Ireland getting 6 points and Latvia getting 2 points is possible, because the people who like party songs split their votes. Thereby, Russia getting the 12 points now isn't weird.

I hope that this fictious example shows that because other songs are competing in a semi it is possible that the final yields a completely different result. Moreover, the final ranking does not show how well a song is. It shows how many people thought the song was the best, thereby a song which is good but nobody likes it the most will still end up in last place.
