Free Language Rule

Postby ESC Fan UK on Thu Dec 07, 2006, 14:06

As more countries are singing in English do you think that an experiment should be set up to go back to the must sing in own native language rule? In my opinion I believe in something called "The language of the heart" which is the language that the artist thinks in and therefore is the language they express themselves in. Many great entries have not been sung in English and does it matter? I think not, whether e.g Carola sang Fångad Av En Stormvind or Captured By A Lovestorm in Rome, it's still a great song. At the end of the day, it's all about the music not the language you sing it in.

In the past I loved ESC for all the different languages and it raised my interest for other languages. I miss that.

I always loved hearing songs sung in different languages - as a kid where else would I hear songs sung in Hebrew or Finnish or whatever? There is a certain charm to foreign language songs that I miss.

While there is a just argument that countries should be able to sing in whatever language they like, I do feel some entries have been spoilt by dreadful English/pronunciation - Belarus for a start.

Poor Tina Karol begging Europe to "talk to my c**t" was the worst pronunication problem I've seen in recent years... but it does add to the occasion!

I don't think the will to revert to the language rule is there anymore but personally I preferred it when there was a greater variety of languages on the night.

When I hear the song first of all I hear the melody, then the voice. Lyrics is the least important thing for me.

I'm all for letting the entries be sung in any language the countries wish them to be sung in. If they had to be in the native language, English speaking countries and countries with languages that are more 'pleasant' to hear could have an advantage over the others.

I also don't see a lack of this kind of rule turning the contest into where the songs are only in English. There have been lots of entries sung in the countries' native languages, even though it wasn't required.

I agree. :) It's no coincidence all post-1991 winners were in English (except for Nocture, which had hardly any words, and Diva, which was filled with words everybody understands).

I definately think we should sing in our own language, makes it much more interesting, the question is, will some countries have an unfair advantage of it?

i cant decide whether its a god idea or not.
with a televote, its best to have them allowed to sing in whatever language they want.
but if we went back to the jury it could go back to the times of being able to get away wiht french and spanish and still winning. and italy'd come back to the fold. and we'd all be a happy family again etc

I think it would be really great if everybody sang in their native language, however, I don't think it's a good idea having that as a rule - it's a free world you know!

For example, Finnish (no offense to Finland or the finnish people) is a very..odd language, I think. And if they were forced to sing in Finnish, I think sadly that they would be last again, year after year.

So, yes to people singing in their native languages, no to making that a rule.

I agree, countries have less chance of winning if singing in a native language unless that language is English! Although I do like to hear entries in other languages.

Everyone should sing it their own language. Let's protect and promote cultural and language diversity!

Well, I think Finnish is a very beautiful language, but that's just my personal opinion.

I don't think it matters what language a song is in, as long as it is good. For me, the main thing I value in a song is the melody and general "sound", the lyrics come only second. Most of my favourite Eurovision songs have been in languages I don't understand.

I prefer it when songs are sung in thier own langauge and just like the orchestra debate I would love to see the rule come back into play. Or maybe some sort of new rule say 3 out of every 5 entries has to be in your native tounge
