Unfortunately the deadline to sign up passed so Austria can't take part in ESC 2008 even if ORF somehow changed their minds :( but let's hope that they'll approve of the system and return in 2009...

ORF will show the final live and even pay to send a commentator to Belgrade  God knows why they couldn't just send a song too...

You mean that guy with the deep voice? He has a cool voice... And didn't they say they thought they had no chance at ESC anymore? Maybe that's why they didn't send a song.

I don't get why you would bother spending all that money to get the rights to show it live, and even more to send a broadcaster, and then not just send a song anyway to ensure that you will get higher ratings? Why waste a prime time slot on a Saturday evening for a show you're nothing to do with, especially if you dislike it so much, as ORF claim to? I don't understand it at all... Austrian logic!

From what I've heard, a lot of Serbs, Turks etc watch the contest on their own TV station and then turn over to Austrian/Swiss/Dutch/etc for the voting numbers - so actually that wouldn't help ratings much at all! And if they can't even vote this year there will be even lower numbers..
